 Tanganika tank
HEre we go i didnt sell my 29 gall tank so i decided i will actually set it up . I am thinking about Altolamprologus family , maybe some breeding group . My questions are , what kind of landscape should i use? Same as malawi tank? ( rocks and drift wood) How many fish i can stock in 29 gall tank? ( best m/f ratio) Ph of water ? (my malawi has 8.4) thank you for answers luke

 Re: Tanganika tank
Tanganyika has all kinds of landscapes. Sand flats. Rocky walls. Beds of grass. Surf zone. If you are going to do Alto, you will want rocks and caves for them to hide in. Your pH is pretty good. If you can get it higher, that would be even better. I probably would only do 1 male and 1 female in a 29 gallon if you are going to obtain the fish fully grown. If you are going to buy fry and have them grow out, I would start with 6 or 8. If you choose the latter though, be prepared for them to take forever and a day to reach maturity. All Alto grow agonizingly slow. I have some that are about 2.5 to 3 years old, and are only about 3 inches. The nice things about Altos though, is that you can keep them with just about anything that is too big for them eat. Have you thought about tank mates for them?

 Re: Tanganika tank
I would not put Driftwood in the tank. The reason being is that a 29 is small and the driftwood (tannins) will affect the ph (lower).
Rocks and breeding caves. IMO
Post some pics soon.

 Re: Tanganika tank
Like afreakin said, I would avoid the driftwood in a 29. But definately, rocks and caves for altos. What Alto are going to keep? Tank mates? You can keep alot of stuff with Altos. Serioulsy, they are beautful fish.
Thank you. Anthony

 Re: Tanganika tank
Having some tankmates would be a good idea, it will help the alto's feel comfortable. If they are in a tank by themselves they tend to get very shy and hide all the time. My Black calvus were ghosts in the tank, I added a group of Paracyp's and within 2 weeks the calvus were hanging out in the open rather than hiding in a cave. Good luck with them, Alto's are really cool fish
