Post Deformed Fry

In a recent batch of healthy fry I got 4 or 5 deformed ones. Their tails are not properly formed and they can't swim. They have lasted for 2 weeks as bottom feeders. Is this common?

The female that produced these had a huge number of babies and these were way in the back. Is this coused by too many babies?

I assume it is one of your mouthbrooding Tilapia? I would only be guessing as to the reason. Are you thinking mechanical damage while in the egg stage in the mouth? I guess it sounds plausible.

I have heard that a too crowded mouth can cause such a thing but to be honest it was from an unreliable source. I have also heard that water quality can also play a role.

How long did the female hold for? In the wild these fish would never survive, natural selection ya know?

I occasionally get deformed fry, malformed or missing caudal fins, twisted spines, etc.
Usually, but not always, they come from inexperienced females.
I would not be concerned.

They went full term. I didn't start to strip until I saw some free swimming fry. These had no egg sack. Water quality is great and I didn't see this with the other 3 females in the same brood tank. This one was really stuffed. The females came from Dykemyster and claimed they were proven females all.

No, there were firefish/dragon's blood's. Never seen this in tilapia. Could be more room. Tilapia eggs are just about the same size, but the females are 10", not 4".
