Post help. unexplained deaths

set up- 35 hex
emperor 280
bubble wand
2 small water changes a week
feed twice a day every other day

2 small angels
4 rummynose
7 neons
2 rams ( now 1) maybe 0 by the time i type this
1 pleco - dead

i had started to get some brown algae on glass and plants
LFS ( very knowledgable) said probably nutrient problem and to take out plants(fake) and scrub as much as i could off , same with glass. i did and i did it in old water while i did a water change as not to kill good bac. he also said add 1 tbl salt ( i used sea salt) he also said a pleco might help even though it was brown algae. so i got sm-med size pleco. acclimated it, he was doing fine . woke up next morning and he was belly up. removed him. everyone else was fine. went to work, came back this a.m.(24 hr shift) and 2 rams are on bottom, lethargic. i checked water nitrate-5 nitrite 0 amm- .25 lost one ram as i was checking water, i just did a 20% change. ram doesnt look good buyt everyone else is fine, the rummynose even have red noses. WTF!

any ideas? i know they never eat much bc the tetras are pigs and get to most of the food. could they have starved?

thanks for the help

It takes a long time to starve a fish. It doesn't happen overnight. Brown algae often shows up in new tanks. This is not a cause of the deaths. I can't think of anything else now. Anyone else? How are they now?
